ParticipantJust received the following message back from my carrier regarding my going over to BasicMed vs. a Class III Medical.
They are the former Aircraft & Marine Assurance, who many with the (former) A.Y.A. (now GOPA) use or used.
Good luck!

ParticipantJust a wild guess… back in the 90’s, I may have “heard about” a Grumman or two that had a non-STC’d car CD player bootlegged in and wired to the audio panel.
Of course, they could have been there for some entirely different purpose, too.

ParticipantRoscoe… Could that infamous evening have been (one of many) at “the center of the universe” in Jon & Ruth’s hot tub??? HAHAHA Has the statute of limitations expired yet? LOL

ParticipantThanks Ed!
It was bestowed upon me nearly 30(+/-) years ago by a quorum of inebriated (and grounded for the evening!) Grumman pilots. You don’t get to pick your call sign, it gets pinned on you! LOL As luck had it at the time, my primary flight instructor was a Tiger owner and former USAF F-4 driver… and was among those that “voted” on my assigned callsign.
Good luck in your Tiger search! I had one years ago, and wish I hadn’t sold it. But, I must say, I am impressed by the performance I am getting out of the AA-5A Cheetah I have now. With the high compression STC and FLetchair’s Sensenich prop on the front, it scoots along pretty well and only sips the fuel. I would still like to to get an electronic ignition added though, for even better fuel economy!
Put up some pics when you finally find the right Tiger!

ParticipantEd,
Think of “voices” as an individual.
So, a posting that says “6 replies, 3 voices,” means there are three individuals and six posts on the subject thread.
Hope that helps! Welcome to the bunch!

ParticipantHi Robert,
Congrats on the Traveller purchase! While I can’t tell you which prop I prefer, I can share some data with you.
I purchased a ’78 AA-5A, and needed to do an O/H on the O-320-E2G.
Lycon did the work. I had the Bill Scott/Precision Engine high-compression STC modification and Lycon did the porting, polishing, and alodine treating of the h/c cylinders. Also, I had FletchAir put on the STC Sensenich prop, that was developed for exactly that engine with the h/c STC.
At my last fueling top-off, my tach since o/h showed 48.06 hours, and my hobbs showed 58.70 hours. My estimated flight time using a timer was in the ballpark of 55.6 hours +/-. To that point, I had burned 406.210 gallons of fuel; meaning it appears I’m burning approximately 7.5gph.
David Fletcher would be able to give you a much more in-depth understanding of the prop, that he holds the STC for, tailored to this airframe/engine configuration. But, to say I love it, would be grossly understated!!!
I do intend to add some form of electronic ignition down the road, which should improve my fuel economy even more.
ENJOY THAT AA-5 and WELCOME TO THE GRUMMAN FAMILY.

ParticipantSonic,
Not 100% sure, but I am guessing you are referring to the STC Ken Blackman had for the aux fuel tanks in the AA-1 series. Roscoe, Matt Wing or Jim Candeletti would most likely be able to fill you in with getting pointed in the right direction. Good Luck!

ParticipantMy first thought is Fletchair at Silverwings (TS36). They did the pre-purchase on my ’78 Cheetah and then removed the engine and sent it to LyCon at my request for complete O/H and upgrade to H/C ported/polished cylinders. I was very pleased with their work. My only complaint… they are in TX and I’m in OH, so too far to go for just an annual.
Good luck!

Great pic of Bede… in the Cable t-shirt.
I can remember Maestre wore the crap out of that ’92 Cable t-shirt he had! I think you wore yours out too, Roscoe. LOL 😉

ParticipantI love it! But, the cool factor would have increased if the departing flight of two had been the old F-14 Grumman Tomcats! I still loved it! 😉

ParticipantRussell,
I am in agreement with Richard. LyCon just did an overhaul for me on my O320-E2G that had also just been upgraded to the (Bill Scott/Precision Engine) high compression cylinders. I had Lycon port, polish and alodine my cylinders too.
After FletchAir put it back on and I flew it back to Cincinnati from TX (mid December), I was VERY happy with the smooth performance I got out of it. I only have about 12 hours on it and it appears the rings have already seated and are broken in!!! Not using up any more break-in oil!!! I talked with more than a few A&Ps and did some homework before I sent the engine to LyCon. VERY GLAD I USED THEM! I would send an engine back to them for O/H in a heartbeat, and I have an engine shop on my home field.
Hope it helps you,
-Yoyo!
