I have my plane in for annual and was told that the IA won’t sign off on my O320-E2G and that it needs a bottom overhaul (top was STC’ed to 160 less than 30 hours ago). The bottom has 2160 hours since new.
I am looking for suggestion for a shop that can zero my engine without costing an arm and a leg. I am in NC and have a quote from Triad and am seeking a quote from Aero Engines in Virginia.
      Any Suggestions?

Being from the “Left” Coast I might not be able to help much. I just had a 0320-E2G O/Hed by Lycon Engines in Visalia, CA and despite the great reputation they have the cost was well inline with other quotes I received. It did take about 4 months, but this was for a complete O/H.
A few years back I had a Continental engine start making metal that was due to a spun bearing. Another shop did the tear down and lower end repair with good results. So if your cylinders are low time, then they should be able to do that. Just the cost difference of doing that over a full O/H is not that great (almost the same amount of labor).

Thanks Richard. I appreciate the input.

      Russell,

I am in agreement with Richard. LyCon just did an overhaul for me on my O320-E2G that had also just been upgraded to the (Bill Scott/Precision Engine) high compression cylinders. I had Lycon port, polish and alodine my cylinders too.

After FletchAir put it back on and I flew it back to Cincinnati from TX (mid December), I was VERY happy with the smooth performance I got out of it. I only have about 12 hours on it and it appears the rings have already seated and are broken in!!! Not using up any more break-in oil!!! I talked with more than a few A&Ps and did some homework before I sent the engine to LyCon. VERY GLAD I USED THEM! I would send an engine back to them for O/H in a heartbeat, and I have an engine shop on my home field.

      Hope it helps you,

      -Yoyo!

      Hi Yoyo:

I assume you are talking about Signature Engines in Cincinnati. I just asked them for a quote, not wanting to pay the freight to ship my engine from Charlotte to CA. So, why did you not use them? Had you heard bad things, or was it the better reputation of LyCon?
      Thanks.

Is there a specific reason for stating it needs a bottom overhaul ? Im sure you have other options. Overhauls are not mandatory. It may well be a wise thing to do but you should have all the options in front of you. My Tiger had a bad camshaft lobe so I elected to do a full overhaul by Penn Yan but I could have done a repair and be perfectly legal too. Is your engine making metal chips in your filter ?

Hi Scott. Thanks for responding. My plane was built in 1979 and has never been overhauled. The bottom has only 2160 hours on it and has sat for periods of over three years. Researching options has led me to believe that, while there are those who are not requiring a rebuild after over 2500 hours, I have over 40 years of limited flying on my engine. Multiple “experts” recommend an overhaul at this point. Since the Top was just done, I am looking at the bottom. Call it piece of mind and a known zero time engine.

      Russ,

I believe only Lycoming can zero time an engine. Also, Lycoming will only install new cylinders on their rebuild/overhaul. Others can overhaul to either serviceable tolerances (which I would not recommend) or new tolerances (which most reputable engine shops do). I have had good luck with Penn Yan, but I lived in New York when the engine was overhauled. So shipping charges were minimal (30 minute flight via the FBOs cargo hauler).

You could also have the IA fail the annual inspection and provide you with a list of discrepancies and unairworthy items per FAR 43.11(a)(5). Then find either another IA or A&P that is willing to sign off the engine as airworthy. AOPA has printed articles on this subject.

Hello and thank you for your inputs. I have decided to use Triad, a certified Lycoming dealer and repair shop, to zero time my engine. I will let you know how it turns out.

Thats a good decision. I would insist on a new camshaft. Not a reground overhauled one. That seems to be the weak link on the lower end. I was going to do an exhange with lycoming but my engine was too old to exchange for a factory overhaul. they wanted to upcharge me to a factory rebuilt. So I went with Penn Yan instead.

A quick update. I was informed yesterday that there has been significant damage done with metal in the bearings, a corroded drive shaft and lifter, and even a damaged ring in one of my new cylinders, and I wasn’t burning any oil for over six hours. How disheartening to have a plane for only 30 hours and need a full overhaul. I will share how the shop treats me in the long run.

Well, Triad finally finished my engine. While I was not prepared for a full overhaul (especially the cost) I do now have a zero time engine with new high compression Lycoming cylinders, new cam, refurbished drive shaft, refurbished case, many other new parts, and a two year warranty. Long time waiting, and they did the work without authorization from me (except to ship the case for inspection). Was about to call to find out when they would know what needed to be done and get my authorization to proceed when I received the final invoice.
Looking forward to flying my plane again. Now if only the shop doing the annual treats me like the very much poorer pilot that I am.
50 more hours at full throttle. Glad I have the 52 gallon tanks.
