      Charlie:

There is much discussion on the Beechtalk forum on this issue.

One thing I learned over there is that the G5 and similar inexpensive digital displays REQUIRE an input from the pitot static system. If you lose that input for some reason, you will also lose your horizon. That is why many folks keep their old air driven horizon as a backup. Another is that some installations do not allow the digital display to be the sole source of attitude information.

I use a clear plastic universal dipstick purchased from Sporty’s and a chart that converts the reading on the stick to gallons remaining in my Tiger.

Four things you can do to increase climb and ceiling capability.

      1. Powerflow exhaust as previously mentioned
      2. Sensenich prop – more efficient and better climb
      3. Climb prop
      4. Take Off at a reduced weight

The climb prop will hurt your cruise speed. Everything else will give better climb, ceiling AND cruise.

Remember that best indicated climb speed changes with altitude. It decreases about 1 knot per thousand feet. It’s important to fly the correct speed to get maximum performance.

Much cheaper to upgrade an Ipad than a panel mounted GPS navigation system.

I like the cheap ADS-B out solution (Navworx) with the Stratus or better still the $250 Strattux, and an Ipad with Foreflight.

The Stratus ESG transponder all in one system is down to $2,995! I like that as well.
