I saw this post this morning and thought I would share it.
5 ADS-B Price breaks coming?
Wed Mar 11, 2015 8:31 pm (PDT) . Posted by: flyby201
I was at an AOPA meeting this evening at which Mark Baker was speaking. On the subject of making ADS-B more affordable he said there was going to be an announcement in 3 weeks which will significantly decrease the cost of ADS-B compliance. He didn’t elaborate much but emphasized the coming changes would have a major impact on the cost of compliance. He was speaking about how a $5K investment for ADS-B in a “legacy” aircraft like say a C-152 with a value of $20,000 didn’t make sense. It made me think the coming solution would be a third of that or less. He also said it could be installed by and A&P and approved by an IA.Anyone have any information to share about this?

This sounds like what he’s talking about. ADS-B Out including the WAAS position signal, antennas and all for $2,000. (Not including installation costs of course)

With ADS-B “in” (you’d want that won’t you?) and installation, the price is closer to $6000 quoted.

I don’t see much reason to panel-mount ADS-B ‘In’ when you can get all that with a portable $900 Stratus box. Might cut a smidge off that $6k, plus you can take it with you if you fly in something else.

I sold my Stratus for $500 and built a Stratux $97. Yep, ADS-B in for less than $100. Look at the Navworx ADS600-B In/Out which meets compliance (and has WiFi option for our tablets) is only $1,799
Here is a link to a completed Stratux and a reference to building your own

I will need the absolute minimum for ADS-B and I have just used a friends stratus box with the ipad and foreflight and I loved it. Already have the ipad so I think a box with the WAAS built in and an antenna installed for say $2500 or $3000 would be the way for me.

Has anyone had experience with the Freeflight systems? I now have the Ranger and my avionics shop had a hell of a time getting it set up properly. It is now working ok but the shop didn’t care for the tech support and got many different answers from them. They learned alot but they have about 85 hours in the lesson. Works ok now though.

Much cheaper to upgrade an Ipad than a panel mounted GPS navigation system.
I like the cheap ADS-B out solution (Navworx) with the Stratus or better still the $250 Strattux, and an Ipad with Foreflight.
The Stratus ESG transponder all in one system is down to $2,995! I like that as well.

Garmin trying to stay kind of close to the competition with a more simple box as well…

$3k if you already have a WAAS position source, $3800 for those of us without. Another interesting option anyway!
