      Hi all,

How do the AA1A through AA1C models perform on grass and relatively short runways? Would you be comfortable on an 1,800′ paved strip with a 250lb pilot and, say, 50lbs of camping gear. How about off of 2,000′ of grass? How’s the prop clearance on these – and the nose wheel holds up OK on grass (I’m talking improved strips, not backcountry stuff)?

I’ve got a fair amount of time in a 150 – wondering how the Yankee stacks up to that in terms of roll and climb. I know it kills it in terms of speed!

For an EXPERIANCED AA-1 pilot flying with the stock 0-235 engine, I would consider these to be minimum runway lengths at sea level. The grass runway lengths might need to be a bit more, though the late Ken Blackman operated a major Grumman shop that he had on a 1600′ grass runway. He flew all the Grumman types in and out of this strip, though he kept them light.
I have an AA-1B with 150HP, and I can operate on about 1,000′ of pavement at gross, but I have some 1700 hours in this plane.
Given the operating conditions you are talking about, the C-150 might be a better choice over a stock engine Grumman. It has better take-off and climb performance then the Grumman, but is not as fast nor as much fun!

Correction, Ken’s runway at Granite Falls is listed as 1470 x 250 ft.
