Asked over on the Red Board, but figure I’ll also ask the experts:
Anyone figure out how to pop a tent or something over the canopy? I’ve been thinking of taking a Tiger to a fly-in and sleeping in the back, but would love to cover the canopy somehow to keep the sun/rain out while leaving the canopy open for fresh air. Thought about asking my in-laws if I could borrow their 10’x10′ pop-up canopy tent that they used to use for tailgating, but I’d need 5 other people or so to help me spread it out, lift it over the wings and canopy, and then extend the legs…was hoping for an elegant one-person solution. Searching the interwebs thus far hasn’t found me anything. Thanks…

Andy,
I did it in a ’73 Traveler back in 1993 for 2 months and it is not bad. I got a piece of 3 inch thick foam, 7’3″ long and cut to fit the cargo bay. I slept with my head up by the seats, they were tied forward. I installed canopy snaps (fabric snaps, like on the carpet on the floors), to hold mosquito netting over the open canopy. I had a wooden folding frame that could erect a tarp/fly over the netting if it was going to gently rain.
Did this first in New Mexico, and found I needed neither the netting or the tarp/fly. In Florida at Sun-N-Fun, I tried this and wished for a 5,000 BTU AC in the baggage door!
Your mileage may vary.

Ooooo…mosquito netting. Hadn’t thought of that…still have mine from my recent deployment to West Africa. And a tarp doesn’t sound like a bad idea, either. Thanks, Roscoe!

I can attest that the 10’x10′ pop-up tent works really well for sheltering the cockpit. Although I did not sleep in the plane overnight, I DID use it to shelter the cockpit while I was doing a lot of maintenance. Made a world of difference. Make sure and use some sandbags, etc to make sure it stays securely on the ground.

Thanks, Tracy! How difficult was it to set up the 10×10? Could you do it yourself, or did you need help? If you needed help, how many more people did it require?
Alas, it may all be moot for me now…without access to the Tigers formerly at Hortman, and the Traveler at Infinity/TTN not really working out for me (long story), I may not be renting AA-5’s much in the future…
