      I was asked the other day what was meant by a smoking rivet. Here is a picture of two in a cover plate on the bottom of the wing. The rivets have worked loose and a fretting the aluminum causing the gray smoke the go back with the slipstream. The cure is either to tighten the rivet up or replace it. If left unchecked, it will work it way through the skin completely.
