N9683U got her new engine back from Custom Airmotive in Tulsa, OK – very nice but I’m not one to leave well enough alone. Powder Coated the rocker arm/valve covers, pinion gear and push-rod tubes. Perhaps a little more “bling” than I wanted but but well worth the effort. This picture was taken back in February and she is now flying but I get a grin every time I open the cowling. Here are a few pictures from the project – more to come!
Aluminum baffling – blasted and cleaned prior to powder coating:
Aluminum baffling, blasted and powder coated in Black Chrome (ran out of regular chrome!):
and another. Yes, you really CAN see your reflection with this 😉
Ever wonder what’s under a cracked, previously-patched dorsal fin? Let’s have a look!
Let’s get a new one and put some nice Imron paint on it!
Heck, let’s get that split-nose STC on the new nosebowl. Should save a lot of time if I need to service the alternator or anything forward of the front baffles:
More to come!

I had not thought of powder coating the baffling. But why not? I like it!
My local shop did a great job on the engine mount, but be sure to “plug” the bolt holes that attach to the firewall yourself, as they (the powder coaters) cannot be trusted (yes, they said they would do it.) Fortunately, my friend Dick Cannon owns a full set of tapered reamers, which removed the errant powder coating without touching the steel mount points. A beautiful engine mount. -

And a few more pictures to throw into the mix. I have a couple of hundred pictures of the restoration and it takes awhile
First, some sadness showing a few pictures of what she went into the shop looking like – almost ashamed to show them but gives you an idea of what your 40+ year old bird can go from – plus everyone enjoys before and after pictures right?
Corroded Main wing spar during inspection:
Airbox shot to heck:
A bit of cam lobe spalling to add to the fun:
And the lifter that was following that cam…
New (serviceable) spar installed – a few pictures of the awesome work to insure the spar (and surrounding area) won’t be dealing with these issues again for another 40 years (I hope?)…
Starter and Master solenoids that have seen better days
Cabin Heat inlet that makes me sad looking at it:
Awesome shots of a firewall that has had its share of modifications and repairs through through the years:
Existing firewall with EDM-830 wires pulled – should have waited until it was painted!
And will post more pictures soon, feel like I’m getting a bit off topic (Engine Powder Coating vs full restoration) but will fill in the gaps later. Here is a little of what she looks like now until I can get some free time to post more pictures:
Before I decided the plain-blue powder coated valve covers had already been done:

Great job! What did you use to seal between the fuselage and the wing root?
