So I’m the new proud owner of a Yankee 11-1A conversion. Went to Florida and flew it back to Minnesota with my CFI. This was quite a learning flight. Not very much information of landing and takeoff with the tail wheel conversion. We found out very early the plane is very touchy. Anyone have any information and advice on there experience. Speeds ,flaps any advice would be great.
Steve, I sent you a private IM. I have a neighbor that has an AA-1A TD and probably has well over 1,000 hours in it. I had a ride in one once years ago, and this is defiantly an airplane for a very experienced tailwheel pilot. But compared to say an RV-6 with the same engine and prop, it is in the same speed range.
Thanks Richard for the information it was great. The weather has finally cleared up in Minnesota and I am back in training. We flew in late the other night and noticed the landing light was pointing up. Not much good when approaching runway. I am having a mechanic look at it. Is there a adjustment when it was converted to TD Or a STC I need to get?
If you don’t have the parts and service manuals for you plane, you can download them from this site.
There is some adjustment you can make to the angle of the light. See attached from the service manual. I don’t know if it will be enough to make you see the ground well in the 3 point attitude. You can check with my neighbor if he did anything different on his (which after many years of ownership he just sold it).
Another option might be one of the LED bulbs which some seem to have a wider beam angle.
