I have found a Grumman tiger that I have fallen in love with. It has about 590 hours SMOH age. I was there when they run a compression check and they were all at about 77. Then they cut open the oil filter and they found this. I am being told this is completely normal. Do you guys agree?

I have a fair number of hours flying but zero experience buying. This is what I was told and it may be 100% completely accurate I am interested in the thoughts of other members

“Oil filter was cut open, pleats cut out and rinsed into avgas. In the picture is the total removed from the filter, mostly carbon deposits, thats in about a 1/4 cup of av gas. The ferrous material is on the magnet laying on a ruler for scale. Nothing unusual, if anything less than normal.”

I am not an expert. Does the engine have steel cylinders? Has it sat long without running? I have more hrs than that on my engine, which flies every week, and just cut my filter. No ferrous material at all. Since it is ferrous, something made of steel is wearing.

So, I am the guy who originally posed this. I decided to send the photos to Lycoming, to Pen Yam (spelling) and another major, major engine rebuilder. They all told me that this was basically normal and they would not hesitate to buy the plane based on this if the pressures were good and an oil analysis (which is coming back tomorrow) showed no serious problems. They were all very very helpful and in this age of litigation (and I am an attorney) I was surprised that they would even offer an opinion. Hope to pick it up on Wednesday and am as excited as a five year old on Christmas Eve.
