Engine Management System Carb Temp Prob installed in a MA-4 series carb on a Grumman Traveler. Whether it is JPI, Alcor, EI, they all look similar. Mike Brown posted in the “Ask the Gurus” Forum about Engine Management Systems and this is the spin off.

I too added a carb temp probe to my EDM-830 on N9683U figuring more information was better than guessing if my carb was picking up ice. Because of the downdraft cooling on our type of aircraft, carb ice is pretty rare but figured it would be nice to know the temperature.

Using our checklists, we normally appy carb heat in the pattern to prevent any issues during the approach and landing. Back in the 70s, without having any information about how cold it was getting in the throat of the carburetor this may have been sound advice, but I routinely glance at the carb temp probe entering the pattern and leave carb heat off if the temperature is above 40 degrees F. My reasoning is that there is little possibility of ice forming above that temperature even if the probe is a little off on its reading and to preclude sucking in dirt/bugs/etc since the carb heat bypasses the air filter when on.

Another side benefit of the carb temp probe is detecting if there is not enough “cushion” on the carb heat control. If the carb temp reads significantly higher than the OAT (Outside Air Temperature) during ground operations then it may indicate that there is a leak or maladjustment of the carb heat cable or leaking airbox (notorious on our Cheetahs).

All in all, pretty fun information to have when analyzing our flights on a rainy day. Like Roscoe, I’m a big fan of the JPI line of engine analyzers and spend a lot of time pouring over the data it provides. For those of you considering an engine analyzer, have a look at the link below for a free service to graph your results.

Does anyone know where to install the carb heat probe on the Tiger and Marvel Schebler carburettor HA-6?

      Thanks for your help.

gFlyer, I only know how it is installed on a Cheetah and Traveler. Being an updraft carburetor, these have a plug between the butterfly valve and the intake manifold gasket. The Tiger has a sidedraft carburetor so I would imagine (without looking at one) that it would be in a similar location.

Call Russ at D&G Supply in Michigan, he’ll know.
