I’m in the process of purchasing a 1972 AA-1A. The canopy operates smoothly and easily. I noticed however with it closed there seemed to be a very large gap between the back of the canopy and the turtledeck. If you look forward from the back into the area where the lock is, it seems to be at least an inch space. The front canopy and windshield seals are there and in good condition, I’m thinking it might be missing a seal at the back, either on the canopy itself or on the fuselage. I’ve looked at the parts breakdown and I think Fig 6A Index 57 is what is missing.

Check with Fletchair for the rear canopy seal. It is a small P shaped seal (see picture).
Some people have put a strip of felt there in place of the factory seal on the inside of the rear canopy fairing, probably 1/4″ thick and 1″ wide could work.
By loosening all the rear canopy screws you should be able to close the rear gap some, but you want a seal there so you do not have metal to metal contact that would rub.

Thanks for the information. At least now I know what I’m looking for. Its a little hard to tell just from the parts manual.
