I have a 79 Cheetah. The alternator light has been on when the engine is running; been like that since I purchased it 23 hours ago. Finally read up on the system and found that I needed to address this (and install a new battery).
With the engine running, when I turned off the Alt. switch, the light turned out. I did not check with the Nav. Lights on.

      With the engine not running:
      Nav. Lights on:
Master ON – Alt ON No light
Master ON – Alt OFF Dim light
      Nav. Lights Off:
Master ON – Alt ON No light
Master ON – Alt OFF Bright Light

Is this an issue with the Overload relay or the voltage regulator?
Should I have the alternator checked just to be sure?

If the voltage regulator is at fault, what are opinions regarding the Plane Power Powerflex R1224?

      Thanks – Russ

Update: After tracing circuits and going through my notes, I now believe it is not the over-voltage relay.
If I pull the “Field” circuit off of the voltage reg., and the light comes on when I start the engine, can I assume it is the alternator and if the light does not it is the alternator?

And thoughts about the Plane Power Power-Flex R1224? It says in the lit not to install in a plane with a separate over voltage relay, but I like the idea of a solid-state solution.

correction: If the light does not it is the “voltage regulator”

To finalize, it was the voltage regulator.
