The previous owner found the frame this morning behind some boxes in his storage unit. Of course the latching mechanism has been removed, don’t know what happened to it. So now what I need is the latching mechanism that attaches to the forward side of the bow Aircraft is serial 0587. Pics of the frame attached.

See attached drawing from the parts manual.
Looks like you need the following…
        #29 is the Retainer Block
26 is a spacer (can be made, and might need 2 or make a thick one if needed)
        30 is the pin
        34 is the roller
        33 is the spring
        The rest is normal hardware
Looks like your are also missing the two alignment pins – #22
And, there are also some retainer plates that go on the back face of the frame to hold the double bead weather seal. (#15, 16, & 17).

Yes, that is all correct. I do have the parts book and see it in figure 6A. I do have the retainers #14,15,&16. I had forgotten about the alignment pins #22 (that explains the holes in the canopy bow). I do not have them either. Do you know the approximate thickness of the shim #26? I’m sure I can make one. Is it aluminum? If there is a damaged bow perhaps these items could be salvaged?

Looks like the Bearing block ass’y part number for serial 0587is 102441-502
This should include all the parts except the shims item #26

I have located the complete new latch ass’y and the shims, all I need to find now are the two alignment pins item #22 pn 102325-2 Any places to look? Thanks

The windshield bow that the previous owner found is bent. Not too obvious at first but when I tried to mate it back to the fuselage it became clear. Also when I lay it up on the canopy it is clearly tweaked. Not too sure if I can straighten it without making it worse. So I’m thinking I should try to locate a serviceable bow. I have a new latching assembly and a couple of the shims and the folks in Texas have new alignment pins in stock, so a bare windshield bow will work for me. My serial # is AA1b-0587 should be the late model frame?

Was able to straighten the windshield frame. Took some doing, Made a fixture on a solid core table and clamped it in place. Traced the outline of the undamaged canopy to use as a reference, then coaxed the frame into shape with clamps. Had to keep moving the blocks in order to ensure the curvature of the bow matched the canopy frame. Put it back on the fuselage and mated the canopy to it. It actually fits now!

Great, glad you could straiten it out. The view of your aft fuselage looks like my -1B with the interior stripped out with all the red primer from the factory. My Yankee project has suffered some from not having the factory primer.

The windshield frame is missing from my project. Apparently the guy removed the windshield and lost it. Would a picture of the canopy and its latching mechanism work?

From the factory the AA-1B had one of 3 different canopy frames.
SN 0001-0237 used the same frame and latch assembly as the earlier AA-1 and -1A. The latch does not have the external top lever.
SN 0238-0392 have the later latch but I think still had screws as the primary attachment for the Plexiglas to the frame.
SN 0393 and one the plexiglass was bonded to the frame and there are only a few screws.
Now after 45+ years it is possible that the things were changed. I am putting the late model frames on the AA-1 Yankee I am working on.

Yes, that would be the late model frame and latch, same as the AA-1C. My AA-1B is SN 0632. Your next challenge is how to properly bond the windshield to the bow. Roscoe has done some good YouTube videos on doing this.

The other item is do you have the latch pin attachment pin, roller, bracket and spring that attach to the windshield bow? If those parts are missing, you have more parts to look for.

I’m hoping to find a complete bow ass’y but at this point I may have to get what I can get and go from there. I have been watching the videos, very helpful. Happily my back windows are already removed so I can exit the airplane after I clamp the windshield frame to the canopy frame!

If you ordered this from the factory that’s how it would have come. Just like if you ordered a new windshield or canopy from the factory it would have come already bonded to a new bow (I did that once). Unless there is a new old stock of this still laying around you will likely need to source the individual parts.

Lucky me! The new latch ass’y and shims arrived today! Only need the alignment pins and our friends in Texas have them in stock. Now I can go back to working on the upper cowling, it needs a lot of help.
