ParticipantBrand new member here. I am considering purchasing a 1977 Grumman Tiger that has one strange thing I cannot figure out. The best way I can describe it is that the trailing edge the ailerons look to have approximately a half inch clipped off… I wish I had a pic to attach but I did not take one. Does anyone know why this would have been done? Was there and AD or something that would have required this? Thanks.

KeymasterFerrell,
Those are what we call ‘clipped ailerons’. It was part of an AD that was not fully understood at the time. It makes the plane handle like a truck instead of a sports car. You will want to get a new set and replace those or find another plane. Since then we have SI 61-01 which allows the AD 79-22-04 to be cancelled if your ailerons meet the profile.
Again, the plane will not feel like a Grumman, it will be heavy on the aileron forces and fly like a piper. I looked at your profile and there was no phone number to call.

ParticipantRoscoe,
Thanks for the reply; I will adjust my profile.
I’m certainly wanting the full Tiger experience; not the Piper experience. I guess we will find out how motivated the seller is…

KeymasterFerrell,
Those replacement ailerons are $1,800 each, so that is $3,600 dollars for the two to change them out. The old ones have no value at all.
Holler if you need a set of ailerons. Install time is about 1 hour.

ParticipantOK, I am going to sound like an obvious newbie now but here goes.
When I read the AD, it looks like the clipping causes any AP to be required to be marked inoperable. There is a Century I on the plane but it has not been placarded or obviously removed. Am I reading the AD right?

KeymasterYou read it right:
(d) If the modification in (c)(1) is accomplished, any autopilot system installed in the
aircraft
must be disconnected prior to further flight in a manner which will not permit use or reconnection during flight. Install a placard in full view of the pilot utilizing a minimum of 1⁄4 inch high letters with the wordingCheers
