Hi Everyone, I am having a pretty frustrating time trying to find solid info on what parts I need for my plane, which is a 1972 AA1A with the Lycoming O235. A few months ago I started having issues with a weak battery. I would go flying and as soon as I landed sometimes it seemed as if the battery was weak and it would only turn over slowly. I bought and installed a new battery. The problem continued. I did some trouble shooting and finally hooked a lead directly off the battery and discovered sometimes it would put off 14 volts, and other times it would only be putting off 8 volts. So I replaced the alternator (Hartsell PN ALE6406) with a Plane power AL12-P70, A 70 amp alternator at their recommendation. I had it installed and now it is popping the breaker. I think the voltage regulator needs to be replaced as well but I’m getting very different feedback as to which voltage regulator to use. PN R1510N is the one recommended for the AA1A but its not a 70 amp regulator. Do I have the wrong alternator or will the 70 amp alternator work with my plane. If that alternator works with my plane do I need a higher amp regulator and breaker? I cant find anyone to give me solid info on this. Thanks!!

The most likely cause was a bad Voltage Regulator or a dirty connection. You should see almost no load when the engine is running you will see the swing as the beacon goes on and off. Pull the spade connectors on and off the master switch to clean them and have your mechanic check the VR.

Put a good charge on the battery and with a new VR, that should fix the problem. You can give Ken (AirModsNW) a call or me.

      Cheers
