I recently purchased a 1979 Tiger and have a question about the temperature probe. The plane has a digital Electronics International temperature gauge with the probe located in the pilot side air scoop. On the ground with engine off the temperature reads correctly. In the air it typically reads anywhere from an estimated 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit too hot. Is this an issue where the probe is picking up engine heat? The manual for the temperature gauge indicates that is the correct placement of the probe on the fuselage. Could it be an issue with the probe itself? Thanks in advance for any input about this issue. I would really like to have an accurate temperature gauge for IFR flight.

Same issue with a JPI. Appears this is the wrong place for an OAT probe.

The NACA scoop looks like a great spot, but it is polluted by warm air leaking out the cowling at the back edge. Most folks add it to the lower wing root on the forward (6 – hole) cover and it works fine there. FYI

Yep… typical location pilot side wing root, 6 screw access panel.
